State Duma deputy asked the Central Bank to restrict trading in shares of the manufacturer HIMARS in Russia

State Duma deputy Alexander Yakubovsky (United Russia) said that Russian investors still have access to shares in defense industry companies from countries that supply weapons to Ukraine. He asked the chairman of the Central Bank (CB), Elvira Nabiullina, to consider restricting trading in shares of such companies in Russia, reports Vedomosti with reference to the deputy’s request.
Operations to buy and sell such shares are possible through the mobile applications of Russian brokers, in particular, Tinkoff Investments. In his request, Mr. Yakubovsky clarifies that he is talking, in particular, about the American Lockheed Martin Corporation, which manufactures HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems. According to analysts cited by the deputy, the shares of this company and other arms manufacturers grew by almost 30% in 2022.
According to Vedomosti’s calculations, securities of 11 foreign companies of the military-industrial complex, which supply weapons to Ukraine, are available on the SPB Exchange. Among them are the American Raytheon Technologies, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, L3Harris, Aerojet Rocketdyne, AeroVironment, V2X and Sturm & Ruger, as well as the German Rheinmetall. The newspaper writes that in general, the capitalization of the 25 largest corporations of the foreign military-industrial complex increased by 15% over the year, from $629 billion to $720 billion.
According to the results of January, the volume of trading in foreign securities on the SPB Exchange exceeded the indicator of the previous month by 1.5 times. At the same time, the activity of investors is still significantly lower than in the summer or a year ago. In addition to the “freezing” of foreign assets of Russian investors, growth is constrained by restrictions on investments in foreign securities for unqualified investors.
