Sri Lanka is discussing with Russia the possibility of joining the Mir payment system, said the Minister of Transport of Sri Lanka, Bandula Gunawardana. According to him, the issue is being discussed, including at the level of the Central Bank of the country.
“Our embassy is discussing this issue because I know that the Russians want to make it easier for them to pay by card in Sri Lanka… We will try to find some way, we will try to get the approval of our Central Bank, and after that it will be possible” said Mr. Gunawardana “RIA News”. According to him, Sri Lanka also wants Russian tourists to be able to pay with cards.
Mir cards are accepted in 11 countries: Turkey, Vietnam, South Korea, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The Ministry of Transport expects that progress on the introduction of the Russian payment system may occur in the near future. “We will get the approval of the Central Bank and will be able to announce it,” the minister added.
The United States earlier this week officially warned third-country financial institutions against expanding cooperation with the Mir payment system. Experts believe that this can significantly slow down the expansion of the geography of accepting Mir cards, as well as damage cooperation with countries where they are already accepted.
