Muscovites still have a chance to buy a live New Year tree. Representatives of trading platforms told Kommersant FM about this. However, 80% to 90% of the assortment has already been sold out. We are primarily talking about imported copies, which retain their presentation for longer than Russian ones. At the same time, large Danish firs were dismantled in the fall. There are only one and a half meter trees on sale, but by December 31 there may not be any left, retailers emphasize. What should those who decide to buy a Christmas tree right before the New Year expect? And how much will it be? Vladimir Rasulov will tell.
It is quite logical to look for a New Year tree just before the holiday. In this case, it will be fresher and will not crumble until Christmas. The fastest and most affordable option for such a purchase is street markets. They mainly feature domestic spruce and pine trees. Peak demand there is expected on December 29 and 30. But such sites will also be open on December 31st. Some – up to 22:00. True, it will be difficult to find a small New Year tree of Russian origin there, says Vladislav Pukharev, head of the network of Christmas tree markets:
“First of all, of course, small trees up to one and a half meters high are dismantled. Toward the end of the trading period, there are more spruce trees left, which means they are more expensive. The average price of a 2-meter tree is about 2.5 thousand rubles. The city provides us with only 20 “squares”, there are many trees that cannot be marked, and sometimes people have to stand in line. In 2023, we introduced QR code payments to eliminate the hassle of handling cash. On December 31st you can safely buy spruce until 20:00.”
Analysts from the Check Index service calculated that live New Year trees have risen in price by 10% over the year. In December, natural spruce cost an average of 2.5 thousand rubles. Pine costs just over 1.5 thousand rubles, and fir costs 7.3 thousand rubles. Despite rising prices, the demand for such products has not fallen. And for some market players it even increased. So much so that pre-orders for imported Fraser fir and Nordmann fir came in in the summer, and the last four-meter tree of this type was sold in November, says the general director of the company “Gardener. ORG” Yuri Resnyansky:
“Prices have increased very much, now a 2-meter premium quality fir costs about 20 thousand rubles. Bringing imported trees from Europe is quite difficult due to logistics, trucks take a long time, and the tree must be freshly cut. On December 31, we are open until 13:00, but in fact the warehouse is already open until 21:00. Self-pickup: users order a taxi and come themselves.”
According to Kommersant FM’s interlocutors, at the end of December, Christmas trees, firs and pines are usually taken by those who hope for discounts. True, there is a risk here: the choice is noticeably reduced, and the first customers take the most beautiful trees. However, for some in the coming weekend you should still expect a discount, emphasizes Roman Larshin, co-founder of the Elka.net online store:
“In terms of discounts, everything is individual: someone starts selling, someone, on the contrary, keeps the price. At the end of the season we make some kind of discount. Sometimes we receive requests even after the New Year, because some clients put up a tree not for the New Year, but for Christmas. As a rule, we don’t work on December 31st; by December 30th everything is usually sold out, and we donate the rest to the church. But if the client has booked a tree in advance and asks for delivery on December 31, then, of course, we will deliver.”
Marketplaces, in turn, are recording a doubling of demand for artificial spruce trees. The sales leader was tabletop trees up to 70 centimeters high, writes New Retail, citing data from Ozon and MTS Bank. But due to the fact that PVC has become more expensive, sales of ornamental trees made from this material have decreased.
According to Check Index calculations, the average price of an artificial Christmas tree increased over the year by 14% – to more than 4.5 thousand rubles. But, unlike her forest sister, she does not have a cold winter, and there is no need to take her home “from the forest”.
