American director, screenwriter and producer Steven Spielberg will be awarded the honorary Golden Bear of the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. This was announced on Tuesday by the organizers of the Berlinale.
Spielberg, as noted in the message on the website of the film festival, will be awarded “for lifetime achievement.”
Film Review co-directors Mariette Rissenbeck and Carlo Chatrian noted that Spielberg “with his incredible career … not only captivated generations of viewers around the world.” He also “gave a new meaning to cinema as a factory of dreams.”
As part of the awards ceremony, the director’s new work Fabelmana will be shown, which premiered on September 10 at the Toronto Film Festival, where the film received the main audience award.
The Berlin Film Festival is one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals along with Venice and Cannes. The Berlinale has been held since 1951. The Golden Bear is the main prize of the film festival. The 73rd Berlin Festival will take place from 16 to 26 February.
