The refusal to work with the Russian Federation of some foreign suppliers of commercial equipment has reoriented part of the business to its purchases on online platforms. Over the year, the demand for equipment for restaurants, shops and beauty salons from ad services grew by 8–24%. This method of purchase is chosen mainly by small businesses and for inexpensive positions.

Equipment for restaurants, shops and beauty salons showed the highest growth rates in the category “Equipment and goods for business” on Avito in 2022, follows from the company’s research. In particular, demand for equipment for restaurants on the site increased by 24%, for stores – by 9%, for beauty salons – by 8% year-on-year. We are talking about refrigerators and freezers, furniture, stoves, stoves, racks, cash registers, tables and chairs for manicure and pedicure, lamps, etc. According to Avito, since 2021, the number of ads for the sale of equipment and consumables for business more than doubled on the platform, with 84% of that coming from new product sales.

Dynamics in Avito is associated with an increase in the number of local equipment manufacturers from the regions, as well as with the development of parallel imports: online platforms allow distributors to quickly build logistics and start deliveries.

Problems with the supply of foreign equipment for shops and restaurants escalated after the beginning of military operations of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and the tightening of Western sanctions. According to the Shokoladnitsa Group, imports of equipment from restaurateurs accounted for up to 30%, and shipments from companies from the USA, Italy, Finland, and Germany were complicated. Dealers have stopped fixing deadlines for the delivery of Turbochef ovens and Menumaster microwave ovens from the USA, Italian Ugolini hot chocolate machines, German Bartscher grills, they list in the group.

Roman Titov, head of the retail equipment department at Azbuka Vkusa, says that the shortage of equipment and components arose back in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and last year some European manufacturers refused to work with Russia, and logistics and payment became more complicated. Igor Karavaev, Chairman of the Presidium of the Association of Retail Trade Companies (AKORT), points out that most of the equipment necessary for work has been replaced with Russian counterparts, and some with equipment from China and Southeast Asia. Today, about 50-60% of equipment in retail chains is locally produced, and this share will grow in the coming years, he notes. According to the managing partner of Vanchugov & Partners Alexey Vanchugov, equipment is primarily purchased through online platforms by small and medium-sized businesses. He explains the sharp increase in demand for restaurant equipment by the dynamism of the market and the willingness of entrepreneurs to invest in this segment if funds are available. Alexander Glushkov, founder of the Mone beauty salon chain, adds that in this industry, entrepreneurs use ad services to buy inexpensive used equipment, and new ones are purchased directly from suppliers.

Vladlen Maksimov, President of the Association of Small Format Trade, says that the purchase of used equipment is more in demand in the restaurant business, and in the field of trade it is often easier and cheaper to order new large-sized equipment than to transport used equipment. Shokoladnitsa Group of Companies is testing alternative models and supply channels, noting that the issue of high-quality equipment of restaurants with technological equipment is still acute. Teremok is negotiating with local producers, Mikhail Goncharov, founder of the network, said. But Evgenia Makhneva, the founder of Management Factory, believes that the quality of equipment from local suppliers does not always match the level of foreign ones.
