Sales of quadcopters with a camera on Ozon and Wildberries in September increased 10-20 times compared to August, calculated in Moneyplace. The growth in demand has affected mainly small-sized drones with a flight distance of up to 150 m. Typically, demand for such products drops at the end of summer, market participants say. Experts believe that partial mobilization could become a demand stimulus. Russian regional officials have already stated that they are buying quadcopters for participants in hostilities.

“Kommersant” got acquainted with the data of the analytical company Moneyplace, from which it follows that in September quadrocopters with cameras became the most popular products in the electronics section on marketplaces.

So, on Ozon, according to analysts, the greatest demand in the category was for a quadrocopter with a built-in camera and a GPS system – Flytrox Skylark 4K, it was bought almost 20 times more often than in August.

In September, the turnover amounted to 483 thousand rubles, while in August it was only 23 thousand rubles. In addition, two more copters entered the top ten popular products on the site: Cloud Six E58 PRO 4K, it was bought 67% more often (turnover in September 495 thousand rubles, in August – 297 thousand rubles) and 4DRC V4, demand growth amounted to 79% (turnover of 516 thousand rubles in September against 288 thousand rubles in August). At Wildberries, the most popular quadcopter was ALFA Multi Brand also with a built-in camera, it was ordered ten times more often in September than in August, the turnover amounted to 793 thousand rubles. (in August – 72 thousand rubles). At the same time, the average bill of quadrocopters sold on marketplaces in September did not change compared to August – 4–8.5 thousand rubles, follows from Moneyplace data. Ozon and Wildberries declined to comment.

Russian regional officials have repeatedly stated that drones are essential equipment for mobilized citizens. For example, the governor of the Kirov region, Alexander Sokolov, speaking to Vladimir Putin, said that the region was buying quadrocopters, household items and thermal imagers for participants in the military operation (see “Kommersant” dated October 10). State Duma deputy, ex-governor of the Ulyanovsk region Sergey Morozov at the same time wrote in his Telegram channel that the mobilized had problems in terms of equipment, as well as “with modern technical means of communication and surveillance”, which include drones (see “Kommersant” dated October 10). The head of the Lipetsk region, Igor Artamonov, reported that he personally brought quadrocopters and chainsaws to the unit (see “Kommersant” dated October 11).

In the military operations in Ukraine, clashes between Russian and Ukrainian drones have already been noticed: for example, on October 13, Ukrainian TV presenter Serhiy Prytula, whose fund raises funds to buy drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, published a video from a drone that collided with another drone, allegedly Russian.

FlyDrone First Deputy CEO Alexander Kaninovsky confirms that there was a sharp increase in demand for drones in September. He explains it by “the interest of Russians in the unmanned hobby” and the introduction of partial mobilization.

“It is unlikely that all purchased drones went to the front, many consumers began to purchase devices more often, including for subsequent resale,” said Mr. Kaninovsky.

An interlocutor of Kommersant in one of the electronics networks said that in general, in the market, except for marketplaces, there was no sharp increase in purchases of drones: given the low volume of sales. In his opinion, mid-range devices are unlikely to be used in military operations or for reconnaissance, since their flight range is up to 150 m: “They can also be blown away by the wind due to their light weight, these are devices for entertainment.”

At the same time, TelecomDaily CEO Denis Kuskov believes that the purchase of even “toy” drones can be suitable for reconnaissance of the nearest area: “Drones are consumables, they are damaged and knocked down, therefore, purchases of devices have increased as part of the NWO. In addition, sales in this volume are unlikely to occur due to the average consumer.
