How to Find the Perfect Heroes for Hard Times Projects

The creators of local series about different eras seem to have found some rules for recreating the atmosphere of bygone days. Significant figures in the frame or behind the scenes, props and, of course, melodrama. Only serials about the nineties do not fit into this scheme. Here, as before, there is a place characteristic of the era of anarchy.

It can be assumed that it was not easy for the producers to switch to projects that would not resemble the “Brigade” or “Gangster Petersburg”. They didn’t switch, and a project about the nineties is still hardly possible without a storyline, one way or another connected with the lads. The connections, however, have become thinner and ironic in their own way, as far as it is generally appropriate in this case.

This year, the theme of the nineties is played out in the new season of “Peace! Friendship! Gum!” and in the series “Indecent Money”. It is quite difficult to compare them, just because “Indecent Money” stalled after showing two episodes. Rumor has it that the reason for this limbo was the unprincipled reputation of one of the creators and some of the artists. Filming began back in peacetime, but by the time of the premiere, in completely new informational conditions, someone behaved, as it were, in the era covered in the project, out of line. And now this is very serious.

However, even in two episodes it is approximately clear what Pyotr Buslov and Co. have started. The well-known director shot very famous actors (from Khabensky and Rozanova to Rappoport and Derevyanko, not forgetting Bondarchuk, Kurtsyn and many others) in a comedy with a rich nostalgic entourage. The hero of Khabensky – a teacher at the institute – instead of a doctoral dissertation is forced to do business, about which he has only a theoretical idea.

To be an optimist, one would like to hope that the project will still reach the final and pick up some intrigue along the way. Now seasoned theatrical artists really have nothing to play. The jokes bring smiles through effort, the storylines seem to be well understood. The time of stalls, dirty doorways and interiors, pitiful to tears, has probably been recreated on a grand scale, but this is no longer enough.

In the series “Peace! Friendship! Gum!” everything is simpler with the interiors, the stars are a bit on the periphery and there is no visual retro fanaticism at all. Instead, fresh faces and a story of growing up in the spirit of Sergei Solovyov’s Tender Age. The series has been standing on this foundation for the third season, and its heroes, having begun their adventures in 1993, have already reached the ninety-sixth, having matured considerably.

It is possible that the main plus of the series lies precisely in the unwillingness of the writers to explore the nineties as an era when certain events took place. Many people who have a very complete idea of that time are sure that they know everything and are unlikely to want to delve into variations on the theme.

For those who have heard something about the nineties, it is probably better to leave this era in the form of the usual trump card set: markets, gloomy guys with guns, big black cars and, of course, generous people, who are sure to meet in such gloomy scenery. All this is neatly arranged around four friends whose age inspires faith in their future.

By the way, many successful world and Russian films and series are built on the life and adventures of young heroes who have a future. Young people are always better than adults, even if these adults are played by super famous actors. And the more mature these actors are, the more likely it is that they will diligently work out their media character in the frame. It’s usually paired with slightly frilly hair and clothes that get even more ridiculous on the Yellow Tulips soundtrack or something like that.

In turn, young actors are unlikely to pull out a weak plot, no matter what era it belongs to. So, once again, it comes down to a rather complex combination of script and characters. There is a much more familiar producer’s bet on stars and budget. However, in the case of the nineties, young prowess seems to be more appropriate. Especially if Yuri Borisov is assigned to the youth in the role of a philosophizing bandit.
