Today, December 21, in the morning, employees of the Ministry of Transport of Japan conducted a search at the headquarters of Daihatsu, Toyota’s small car division, in Ikeda. The search took place after the company admitted falsifications in vehicle crash tests.
Yesterday, December 20, Daihatsu announced about the suspension of deliveries of all its models produced both in Japan and abroad. In April, the company admitted falsifying the results of side impact crash tests for 88 thousand vehicles. Subsequently, an independent commission conducted an investigation and declared serious violations against all 64 models and 3 engines produced by Daihatsu.
Now Daihatsu faces fines for these violations, in addition, the Ministry of Transport may require the recall of previously sold vehicles. The company accounts for about a third of the small car market in Japan. Daihatsu sold 1.7 million vehicles last year.
