The Commission on the Culture of Ancient and Medieval Rus’ of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences “History of World Culture” applied with by letter to the Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova. The commission, headed by the well-known linguist, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Gippius, includes authoritative domestic art critics, historians and philologists, whose research is in one way or another connected with ancient Russian culture: medievalist historian Elena Konyavskaya, chief curator of the Novgorod St. Sophia Cathedral Tatyana Tsarevskaya, historian of architecture and archaeologist Vladimir Sedov, specialists in ancient Russian painting Alexander Preobrazhensky, Irina Sterligova, Irina Shalina and others.
The authors of the letter point out that the planned relocation of the icon exposes it to serious danger due to changes in the microclimate and vibrations during the process of moving. The appeal emphasizes that at present, “as well as in 2022, it is impossible to create a showcase, capsule or other device in a short time that could ensure the stable state of the icon in the space of the existing temple,” and “various manipulations with the icon, whose condition already bordering on emergency, will only accelerate the process of its destruction, which will be extremely difficult to stop.
Assessing the current state of the monument, the commission insists that it makes it “impossible and unacceptable” to move the “Trinity” to the temple for liturgical use. The priority issues of the present moment are called “stabilization of the state of the icon, strengthening of damaged areas and further long-term monitoring of the work in museum conditions.”
“The only space suitable for placing the icon of the Trinity by Andrei Rublev is the halls of the Tretyakov Gallery,” the authors of the letter sum up. function”.
May 23 in social networks was published minutes of the meeting of the extended restoration council of the Tretyakov Gallery on May 15, dedicated to the state of the Rublev icon (see “Kommersant” dated May 19). As a result of the discussion, the council members unconditionally recognized that “the icon “Holy Trinity” by Andrei Rublev is not subject to extradition outside the Tretyakov Gallery on the feast of the Trinity on June 4 this year due to the complex and unstable state, as well as the unpredictability of the ongoing process of negative changes.” In addition, the protocol also cites the position of the director of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Elena Pronicheva: “I would like our common understanding that the icon should be in a state of rest in the near future.”
At the moment, the icon is undergoing urgent restoration in the depository of the Tretyakov Gallery. Archpriest Leonid Kalinin, chairman of the expert council of the Moscow Patriarchate on church art, architecture and restoration, admitted yesterday in a conversation with Interfax that on June 4, not the original of the Trinity, but a copy of it, will be exhibited in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
