Director Kirill Serebrennikov said that his performance at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg was attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“First he drank wine in the smoking room,” Serebrennikov said on his Telegram channel, “and after the performance he went backstage and expressed his delight to the artists.”
According to the director, one of the actors sang an improvisation in which he joked about Scholz’s relationship with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban: “Everyone laughed, and it seemed that the chancellor was not offended.”
He also quoted theater director Tom Till as providing details of the high-level visit. According to him, the theater was warned about the chancellor’s visit on Friday evening. Before the start of the performance, “two limousines quietly drove up to the building” and after a short reception, Scholz, accompanied by security guards, went into the auditorium and sat down in the stalls among the spectators.
