Sales of new passenger cars and LCVs in Russia increased by 112.1% yoy in May

In May, sales of new passenger cars and LCVs (light commercial vehicles) in Russia grew by 112.1% yoy to 51.5 thousand units, the Association of European Businesses reported (pdf). In the first five months of 2023, 228.5 thousand cars were sold in the country. This is 26% less than in the same period in 2022.
The first place in popularity was taken by AvtoVAZ, whose sales quadrupled last month, to almost 24 thousand. In January-May, 115.8 thousand Lada cars were sold (an increase of 72% yoy). In second place is the Chinese Haval, whose sales increased by 8.5 times, to 7.6 thousand cars, in five months – by 3.1 times, to 31.6 thousand. The Chinese Geely, which increased sales by 7 .8 times, up to 7 thousand, in five months – 3.8 times, up to 25.9 thousand cars.
“AUTOSTAT” reported that compared to April, the market for passenger cars in May decreased by about 4.6%. Such a drop was due to the long weekend, due to which the past month was traditionally a period of lower sales. More than 30% of sales in May accounted for the domestic Lada, the AvtoVAZ Granta model is also popular, and the remaining places in the top 3 are occupied by cars of brands from China.
