From January to September, sales of oral contraceptives (prescribed to prevent unwanted pregnancy) exceeded 20.7 billion rubles, they report “Vedomosti” with reference to DSM Group. According to her calculations, this is the maximum in the last six years. The year-on-year increase was 5% (last year, such funds were sold for the same period for 19.7 billion rubles). The increase in sales of such drugs may be due to restrictions on the supply of drugs for emergency termination of pregnancy, say experts interviewed by the publication.
RNC Pharma also confirmed an increase in sales of such drugs. According to her data, over nine months the increase was 23.5% in physical terms and 21% in monetary terms. The company did not provide absolute values. In the pharmacy chain “36.6”, sales of pills to prevent unwanted pregnancy increased by 3.1% over the year, similar figures were reported in “Pharmacy 25”.
Among the reasons why sales of such drugs are growing, company representatives and doctors highlighted the growing level of women’s awareness of their health, which has resulted in more active use of combined oral contraceptives. In addition, oral contraceptives are prescribed for the treatment of various diseases, such as uterine fibroids or acne.
In October, the Ministry of Health tightened circulation of drugs for abortion. The department has added misoprostol, mifepristone and cyclopentolate to the list of drugs subject to subject-quantitative accounting. The order will come into force on September 1, 2024 and is valid until September 1, 2030. Head of the department Mikhail Murashko called “vicious practice” is the desire of women to build a career, postponing childbearing until later.
