S7 Group announced its decision to merge Globus and Siberia airlines. As a result of the reorganization, Globus will cease operations, the company’s press service said.
“By the decision of the sole shareholder of Siberia Airlines JSC, a decision was made to reorganize in the form of a merger with Globus Limited Liability Company,” – leads TASS message.
Globus was created in 2008 to develop charter flights within the holding, S7 quickly realized that this segment was unprofitable, but the already established airline was retained, spoke in 2019, Vedomosti shareholder (at that time – senior vice president) S7 Tatyana Fileva. Then the holding company decided for the first time to merge Globus and Siberia, the process was completed in the next year, 2020.
In the summer of 2021, S7 announced the creation of the low-cost carrier Citrus, which will be launched in early February 2022. received an air operator certificate for commercial transportation on the basis of the Globus legal entity. The low-cost carrier, as expected, was supposed to start flying on Airbus A320neo aircraft from the summer of 2022, by 2024 its fleet was planned to be increased to 24 aircraft.
At the beginning of June of the same year, S7 announced on the freezing of the project, explaining this decision by the fact that due to Western sanctions, the deliveries of the aircraft necessary to launch the low-cost airline will not take place. S7 and Globus continued to operate codeshare flights that summer.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the United States, Great Britain, the European Union and other countries closed their airspace to Russian aircraft. After the imposition of sanctions, foreign lessors began to demand that Russian companies return the aircraft. Also, companies stopped repairing such aircraft and supplying parts for them. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree according to which airlines must transfer lease payments in rubles to accounts in Russian banks. They also got the opportunity to re-register the aircraft in Russia in order to continue their operation.
