The PD-35 engine with a thrust below 35 tons may appear by 2030, said Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov. According to him, a decision on the exact parameters of the engine is planned to be made in the spring of 2024.
“It’s not a fact that it’s (traction.— “Ъ”) will be 35 tons, it will most likely be smaller, with a thrust of 26 tons to 35 tons. In March next year, we will understand more precisely in what form the engine will be created,” said Mr. Manturov (quoted by TASS).
An engine demonstrator is also scheduled to be built in March. The minister clarified that the engine is designed for several aircraft. First of all, they want to use it on a military transport aircraft with a payload of about 100 tons and a wide-body long-range aircraft being developed together with China.
Development of the PD-35 engine began in 2016 at two plants: Perm Aviadvigatel and Rybinsk Saturn (part of the United Engine Corporation, UAC). 180 billion rubles were allocated for the project. In December 2022, UAC reportedthat the development timeline for the PD-35, which was supposed to be presented before 2027–2028, has been pushed back by a couple of years.
