The Finnish Central Criminal Police, together with Estonia, is creating an investigation team to investigate a criminal case due to a leak on the Balticconnector gas pipeline. The Finnish agency stated that they have made progress, primarily in terms of checking ships traveling in the emergency area. Research is also underway on the seabed and the traces left there.

“Sea conditions are currently difficult, which is slowing down exploration of the seabed. The area under investigation is large and located tens of meters below sea level, which makes the investigation particularly complex,” commented the head of the investigation, Risto Lohi, whose words are quoted in press release Finnish police.

On October 8, Balticconnector operators recorded a drop in pressure in the offshore part of the gas pipeline. Pipeline blocked, the leak was stopped. Finnish President Sauli Niinistö believes that the damage may be the result of external influences. Finnish police discovered “external traces” in the leak area. NATO threatenedthat if the version of sabotage is confirmed, the alliance will give a decisive response.
