In 2022, the revenue of Russian developers of operating systems increased manifold due to demand from corporate consumers, which was stimulated by tougher import substitution requirements and Western sanctions. At the end of 2023, OS developers will continue to increase revenue, as far from all companies have managed to meet the new requirements, experts say. But in the consumer segment, sellers and manufacturers of electronics admit that domestic solutions are not yet very popular.
“Kommersant” interviewed Russian developers of operating systems (OS) about the results of 2022. So, in the Rusbitech-Astra group (they release the Astra Linux OS), they said that its revenue in 2022 increased from 2.4 billion to 6.5 billion rubles. (According to SPARK-Interfax, according to the results of 2021, the net profit of Rusbitech-Astra amounted to 1.3 billion rubles, the figure for 2022 was not disclosed in the company.) The group added that during the past year they expanded the staff more than doubled, up to 1 thousand employees. The share of the financial sector in revenue in 2022 amounted to about 20% (in 2021 – 4%), the fuel and energy complex, the oil and gas industry and industrial enterprises account for more than 60% of the total supply for the year, specifies Ilya Sivtsev, General Director of Rusbitech-Astra. By the end of 2023, the company plans to double its revenue.
They also talk about the growth of revenue in Basalt SPO (OS Viola). The company’s commercial director, Roman Myskin, told Kommersant that its revenues “more than doubled” last year, and by the end of 2023, another 30% growth is expected. Absolute data was not disclosed by the company. According to SPARK-Interfax, at the end of 2021, the revenue of Basalt SPO amounted to 327 million rubles, of which net profit was 92 million rubles.
The deputy CEO of Red Soft (they release Red OS) Rustam Rustamov refused to disclose the company’s financial performance for 2022, but said that the demand for the operating system “has increased many times over.” The revenue of Red Soft in 2021 amounted to 581 million rubles. with a net profit of 82 million rubles, follows from the data of SPARK-Interfax.
The president of the Russoft association, Valentin Makarov, attributes the growth in revenue of Russian OS developers to the need for large customers to comply with the government’s requirements for import substitution of software, which were significantly tightened in 2022 against the backdrop of sanctions.
A month after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, on March 30, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decree, according to which, from March 31, 2022, companies are prohibited from purchasing foreign software for use in critical information infrastructure entities (CII; these include banks, telecom operators, fuel and energy companies, etc.). From January 1, 2025, companies are prohibited not only from purchasing such software, but also from using it.
In 2023, Russian OS developers will continue to increase their revenue, they are planning growth for this year from several tens of percent to a twofold increase in profits, says Igor Martyushev, Director for the Development of Electronic Services and Software Solutions at F + tech-Marvel: “Unless there is a sharp deterioration in the economic situation, then growth will continue, since far from all companies have abandoned foreign software.
In 2022, Russian OS developers tried to increase their presence not only in the corporate, but also in the consumer segment, starting to sell their solutions through retail chains. In the M.Video-Eldorado group, Kommersant was informed that they had copies of Red OS on sale last year, as well as office packages of P7-Office. Citilink has been selling products from Basalt SPO, Red Soft and other companies since 2022. Retailers declined to report how many copies of Russian operating systems were sold in 2022. But the representative of the Association of Trade Companies and Manufacturers of Electrical Household and Computer Equipment RATEK (which unites M.Video-Eldorado, DNS, etc.) Anton Guskov says that in the consumer segment, Russian operating systems are sold in small quantities, since ordinary consumers are not used to working on a Linux-based device.
