The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) intends to transfer five new submarines to the Russian Navy this year – two nuclear and three diesel-electric, said USC CEO Alexei Rakhmanov.
“Sevmash and Admiralty Shipyards will hand over two nuclear and three diesel-electric submarines to the fleet,” Mr. Rakhmanov said in an interview. “Interfax”. He did not name the exact dates for the transfer of the submarines. According to him, the company has already handed over two surface ships to the Navy this year – after repairs at the Yantar Baltic shipbuilding plant, the Neustrashimy patrol ship and the newest Mercury corvette built at Severnaya Verf. Also, USC soon expects to transfer the frigate Admiral Golovko (Northern Shipyard), and the corvette Sharp (Amur Shipbuilding Plant).
In December, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that in 2023 the Navy should receive a strategic nuclear submarine of the Borey-A project, Emperor Alexander III (Project 955). In February, the head of the USC also announced transfer of the Krasnoyarsk nuclear submarine (project 885M, Yasen-M) to the Navy.
Project 955 submarines belong to the 4th generation of nuclear submarine missile carriers. They are armed with 16 Bulava ballistic missiles and are designed to solve the problems of strategic nuclear deterrence. Project 885M nuclear submarines are a modernized version of Project 885, armed with Caliber and Onyx cruise missiles.
