Russian metallurgists increased supplies of cast iron to the EU by 40% - Kommersant

At the end of nine months of 2023, pig iron exports from Russia to the European Union (EU) increased by 40% year-on-year, to 1.25 million tons. This is reported “Vedomosti” with reference to data from the European Statistical Agency (Eurostat).

In September, deliveries doubled to 117,153 tons. Russian products accounted for a total of 61% of total EU imports of pig iron. Other major suppliers include Brazil (272,714 tonnes in nine months), South Africa (230,248 tonnes) and Ukraine (160,942 tonnes).

According to the World Steel Association, during the reporting period, global pig iron production increased by 1.9%, to 1.07 billion tons. Among the leaders are China (675.2 million tons), India (100.2 million t), Japan (47.5 million t). Russia ranks fourth with 46.7 million tons – 4.3% more than in the same period in 2022.

15th of November Bloomberg reported that the EU, as part of the 12th package of anti-Russian sanctions, is considering introducing a ban on the import of cast iron, as well as diamonds, liquefied gas, chemicals, and lithium batteries. It is estimated that the new restrictions will cause damage to Russia of $5.3 billion per year.
