Russian market is dominated by private investors – Kommersant

The share of private investors in the Russian stock market is almost 100%, said Vladislav Kochetkov, President, Chairman of the Board of FG Finam at conferencesorganized by Kommersant Publishing House as part of SPIEF-2023. According to him, the average portfolio size of a retail investor is now about 200 thousand rubles. Taking into account the fact that there are more than 25 million such investors, a private investor in the stock market accounts for about 5 trillion rubles.

“The market is doing well, contrary to expectations. Over the past year, it has undergone a colossal transformation, turning into a private investor market. For obvious reasons, non-residents left, institutionalists take a very conservative position, so private investors generate turnover. If in 2021 the average monthly turnover was slightly less than 85 trillion rubles. per month, taking into account the foreign exchange market – then non-residents, arbitrage transactions were active, now we see a turnover of more than 94 trillion rubles only in the private investor market. per month,” said Mr. Kochetkov.

As Kommersant previously wrote, investments by individuals in the shares of residents for 2022 amounted to 1.076 trillion rubles, which is 2.6 times more than in 2021. Investments of individuals in bonds of residents increased by 178 billion rubles. At the same time, the Russians sold shares of non-residents for 208 billion rubles, and bonds – for 189 billion rubles. According to the Central Bank, the total number of clients of brokerage organizations last year increased by 40%, to 2.9 million, while the volume of their assets decreased to 7.3 million (by 7.3%).
