Up to five types of plastic packaging, including colored plastic bottles, may be banned in Russia by 2024, up to 20 by 2030. This will be done within the framework of the federal project “Circular Economy”. This was reported “News” with reference to the presentation of the Russian Environmental Operator (REO).
In the first phase, the REO proposed limiting PET bottles in non-traditional colors: anything other than white, clear blue, green and brown. The restrictions will also include thin shrink wrap, a mesh bag for vegetables and fruits, a plastic bag with a doypack bottom and plastic capsules for coffee.
According to Izvestia, the Ministry of Industry and Trade also prepared a report to the government on restrictions on plastic packaging. The agency proposed limiting four types of packaging: multi-colored “acidic” PET bottles, thin shrink film, containers with a PVC label, and packaging that used insoluble adhesives. The agency does not provide a timeline for the ban.
As explained in the REO, the main point of the project is to abandon non-environmentally friendly packaging, which is difficult to recycle. The Ministry of Industry and Trade also explained the ban on packaging by the complexity of its processing.
