Russia and South Africa are discussing the creation of a gas power plant in an African state. About it informed Russian Deputy Energy Minister Sergei Mochalnikov at a meeting with South African Ambassador to Russia Mzuvukile Jeff Maketuka.
“Our countries are interested in developing mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sector. Today, we are working with our South African partners on the possibility of building a gas power plant,” Mochalnikov said, quoted by the press service of the department.
According to the minister, the parties are already discussing the supply of equipment and Russian LNG for the efficient operation of new generating capacities.
In addition, the meeting discussed further cooperation in the field of electric power industry and modernization of coal-fired power plants, in which Russian companies with rich experience in this field can help. Mochalnikov believes that the repair and modernization of coal facilities can be carried out through concession agreements fixed at the intergovernmental level.
The negotiations, as explained in the Ministry of Energy, were held on the eve of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) ministerial meeting on energy, which will be held in Johannesburg on August 18. On August 22-24, for the first time in three years, the BRICS summit will be held in person. Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS summit via videoconference, and in Johannesburg the delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
