Roslesinforg, subordinated to Rosleskhoz, and several sellers of Christmas trees warned of a decrease in the supply of imported trees before the New Year against the backdrop of sanctions, as well as a possible increase in the price of Christmas trees, informed RBC with reference to the press service of the department and market participants.
According to Vladislav Pukharev, director of the Elki.ru company, the decrease in the volume of Christmas trees, which were usually imported to Russia from European countries, is due to the fact that this year they fell under sanctions. As a result, imported live Christmas trees can increase in price by 70%.
The price increase will be affected by difficulties with logistics and sanctions restrictions. In particular, sellers can choose to re-export Christmas trees through friendly countries, which will increase the cost of goods by 5-30%, the press service of Roslesinforg noted.
They also added that despite the decrease in supply, they do not expect high demand. “But do not forget that Christmas trees are a seasonal product and are neither an essential item nor a luxury item, so we do not predict high demand,” the message says.
At the same time, market participants note that, in general, the shortage of imported Christmas trees will not be strongly felt, since Russians most often choose domestic living trees. In particular, according to the Center for Industry Expertise of the Russian Agricultural Bank for 2020, the share of imported Christmas trees accounted for only 5% of the market.
According to Roslesinforga, at least 55,000 pines, spruces, firs grown in Russia will be harvested this year. Basically, New Year trees that go on sale are grown in the Kemerovo and Irkutsk regions, as well as in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Christmas trees are most often brought to Central Russia from the Novgorod region. The “main spruce tree of the country”, which is traditionally installed on Cathedral Square, was delivered to the Kremlin from Shchelkovo near Moscow last year. Where the main Christmas tree will be this year is still unknown, Roslesinforg specified.
