Deputies will not change the law on LGBT propaganda at the request of the Internet trade association

The head of the State Duma committee on information policy, Alexander Khinshtein (United Russia), received an appeal from the Association of Internet Trade Companies (AKIT) with a request to postpone consideration of an amendment to the law on consumer protection, which prohibits the sale of goods with illegal information. This will primarily affect products with an LGBT theme. Mr. Khinshtein said that the legislators did not intend to abandon the initiative.
As the deputy said, today he held a meeting with AKIT, as well as industry representatives (Ozon, Avito, Citilink, Yandex, SberMegaMarket, Wildberries, Labyrinth, Detsky Mir). “In the course of a long discussion, we managed to explain to our colleagues that this norm is necessary. If LGBT books are banned from sale in stores, but remain on electronic platforms, our efforts are worthless,” wrote Alexander Khinshtein in Telegram.
At the same time, he acknowledged that “there are risks of free interpretation of new norms by regulatory authorities.” In the near future, it is planned to hold another meeting with business with the participation of Roskomnadzor, Rospotrebnadzor and the Ministry of Culture. “We will also ask these structures to prepare the necessary written explanations,” he assured.
On October 27, the State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill on a complete ban on LGBT propaganda in Russia, including in the media, the Internet, advertising, literature and cinema. State Duma also intends expand the list of prohibited information to include materials promoting gender reassignment. At the same time, it was decided reject amendments criminalizing LGBT propaganda. Enforcement of the law raised concerns among representatives of the book industry and the media.
