In Russia, in connection with the adoption of a law banning the propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships, LGBT, gender reassignment and pedophilia, 19 thousand publications were blocked (“The International LGBT Movement” was recognized by a Russian court as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation). In 2022, 239 such pages were blocked.
A representative of Roskomnadzor provided statistics on blocking to the newspaper “Vedomosti”. It is noted that the law on LGBT began to work in full force in September 2023, when all by-laws were adopted.
In addition, 26.3 thousand publications with child pornography were blocked in 2023, which is comparable to the figure in 2018 (26.4 thousand). In 2024, such a decision was made in relation to 29.4 thousand materials. The CEO of the Safe Internet League, Ekaterina Mizulina, told Vedomosti that there is less content with child pornography. According to her, her distributors are now posting materials in closed chat rooms and the darknet.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning LGBT propaganda on the Internet, media, books, audiovisual services, cinema and advertising in December 2022. Among other things, Roskomnadzor considers as propaganda attempts to arouse interest in non-traditional sexual relationships and help change negative attitudes to positive ones. In November 2023, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation banned the activities of the formally non-existent “International LGBT Social Movement” in the country, recognizing it as extremist.
