The iFly airline did not send the Federal Air Transport Agency an assessment of the risks of flights through the airspace of Syria, as well as a list of measures to reduce them. The airline will receive permission to fly through Syria after it provides guarantees that passengers’ rights to safe air transportation are respected. This was reported in press service Rosaviatsia.
“The decision on the possibility of operating iFly flights through the airspace of Syria can only be made after a detailed study of the issue with all authorized bodies and receipt of appropriate guarantees from the air carrier on the observance of the rights of passengers to safe air transportation,” the Federal Air Transport Agency said in a statement. The ministry added that they continue to work on harmonizing the safe use of Syrian airspace by Russian airlines.
In turn, the press service of iFly reportedthat the company plans to resume flights to Egypt on the evening of 16 December. The company added that, according to their assessment, the route through Syria is safe, it can be used for regular flights.
On December 15, more than a thousand iFly passengers were unable to fly from Moscow to Egypt. The cancellation was explained by the closure of Jordanian airspace. iFly was unable to provide an insurance certificate due to sanctions against Russia. The Federal Air Transport Agency later stated that Syria is considered dangerous for air travel in the regions, an alternative route to Egypt passes through the country. The ban on air travel through its airspace was introduced 10 years ago.
