Rosatom postponed the launch of its virtual operator to 2024

Information Technology Director of Rosatom Evgeny Abakumov said RBCthat the state corporation will be able to fully launch its own virtual telecom operator only in 2024. The reason for the postponement of the launch date of the project, according to Mr. Abakumov, was “difficulties of an organizational and technological nature.” However, he stressed that Rosatom “does not abandon the project.”

We are talking about the MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) project, which uses the infrastructure, radio frequencies and numbers of a partner, a cellular operator. Mr. Abakumov explained that the creation of the MVNO was planned for the deployment at Rosatom’s facilities of technological networks for fourth-generation mobile communications (4G) in the Private LTE format (a private network created within one organization and isolated from public networks).

“Due to the introduction of sensors and the Internet of things in the enterprise, it is possible to increase the efficiency of many processes. An own operator is needed to provide wireless Internet of Things services to solve the problems of the corporation,” he said.

Yevgeny Abakumov clarified that Rosatom will not use the capacities of existing operators, but intends to partially build its own network, since data storage locations are of particular importance for the state corporation.

Most of the mobile operators with whom Rosatom is negotiating the use of the network receive and store data at their own facilities, in particular, for this reason, the project has not yet been implemented, the company’s IT director explained.

Kommersant announced the launch of the virtual operator Rosatom on January 19. Sources then called Tele2 as partners. The register of licenses issued by Roskomnadzor says that on September 29, 2021, a subsidiary IT integrator of Rosatom, Greenatom, received a license to provide mobile communication services in Russia for a period of five years. The license will become effective in September 2023. At Greenatom and Tele2, Kommersant refused to comment at that time.
