Rosatom is discussing the transfer of sea transportation of oil from the Baltic to the Northern Sea Route

The State Corporation Rosatom is working with oil companies on the issue of redirecting sea transportation of oil from the ports of the Baltic Sea to transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR). The head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, said this at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The NSR is the shortest sea route between the European part of Russia and the Far East, serving the ports of the Arctic and large rivers of Siberia.
“Now we, together with Russian companies, are working on the issue of redirecting Russian oil from the Baltic ports to the NSR as the safest and most attractive route,” said Mr. Likhachev (quoted by Interfax).
According to the head of Rosatom, the cargo traffic along the NSR in 2022 amounted to 34 million tons, which is 2 million tons more than planned. Compared to 2021, cargo traffic increased by 1 million tons, Mr. Likhachev noted. He said that this year the plan is 36 million tons.
In March of this year, it became known that Rosatom discusses with Gazprom Neft and LUKOIL, oil transportation in the summer-autumn navigation along the NSR to the east on conventional tankers and icebreakers. We are talking about oil, which before the sanctions went in a western direction.
By evaluation Rosatom, which is the curator of the NSR, by 2030 the cargo flow through it can increase to 224 million tons, and with high investor interest, by 2035 it can reach 271 million tons. In addition to the transportation of hydrocarbons, the loading of the highway should be ensured by cabotage and transit, as well as the development of new mineral resource clusters of polymetallic ores.
