Rosatom does not fix serious refusals from fuel contracts

Kirill Komarov, the first deputy head of the state corporation Rosatom, said that there were no serious refusals from its fuel abroad. Even under sanctions, planes from Russia continue to deliver fuel to European facilities, Mr. Komarov told reporters.

“We are too big a player in this space to just stop wanting to work with us,” said the first deputy head of the company. “Shipments continue both in the USA and everywhere in the world,” said Kirill Komarov. He also stated that Rosatom had signed 12 new contracts for the supply of uranium products. “Since the beginning of 2022, we have signed 12 new contracts for various deliveries of various uranium products with customers from seven countries of the world,” Mr. Komarov said (quoted from “Interfax”).

In 2021, the European Union (EU) and the US bought approximately 30 thousand tons of uranium, or 78 million pounds of U3O8 (uranium oxide). Russia last year exported about 5,000 tons of uranium to these countries, or about 70% of its total production in Russia and Kazakhstan. Over the past decade, Western clients have been increasing their purchases in the Russian Federation.

Earlier, a number of Rosatom projects in the EU were under threat. For example, the Swedish Vattenfall refused from the purchase of a new type of Russian-made fuel for the Ringhals NPP. Vattenfall will use French Areva or American Westinghouse fuel.
