The Russian company Rosatom and the authorities of Sri Lanka have agreed to build a nuclear power plant with a capacity of up to 300 megawatts. This was announced at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum (SPIEF) by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia Janita Liyanage.
“We are moving towards the construction of a nuclear power plant on the island, but there is still a discussion about whether it will be a floating power plant or a land-based plant,” Janita Liyanage said on the sidelines of the RIA Novosti forum. According to her, representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also participate in these negotiations.
In the near future, Sri Lanka, with the help of Rosatom, will begin to train specialists in the nuclear field. “This is the only way to resolve the fuel crisis in the country, we understand this and are moving very quickly on this issue, construction will be launched in the near future,” the Ambassador of Sri Lanka emphasized.
The most likely power option for the future nuclear power plant is 300 megawatts. The Ada Derana portal, citing the Atomic Energy Council of Sri Lanka, reported that the first nuclear power plant with the technical support of Russia would be built by 2032.
In April 2022, as a result of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, a default on external debt occurred, in addition, raw materials for electricity rose sharply in price. Sri Lanka requested financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
