The second revocation of licenses from Russian banks from the beginning of 2024 does not mean the beginning of clearing out the sector, First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Dmitry Tulin told reporters on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the regulator with bankers, organized by the Association of Russian Banks. According to him, the Bank of Russia is eliminating specific problems.
“This is absolutely spot-on work. We waited a year and a half not because we had some kind of moratorium. Nobody gave any reason. And then claims have accumulated,” Dmitry Tulin answered the corresponding question (quote from TASS).
February 21 Central Bank recalled license to carry out banking activities from Qiwi Bank. The revocation of a credit institution’s license led to disruptions in the country’s payment system. The potential volume of creditors’ claims could reach up to 35 billion rubles.
February 28 regulator recalled license from the Hephaestus Bank, registered in the city of Kimry, Tver Region. The credit organization ranked 336th in size in the Russian banking system. According to the Central Bank, the bank violated the requirements of the law on combating legalization of proceeds from crime and the financing of terrorism. Payments to depositors of a bank that lost its license are estimated at 181.2 million rubles.
