Revenues from the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas, fell by 40% year-on-year in the first 11 days of this year, said the head of the canal authority, Osama Rabia. According to him, this happened due to bad weather.
He clarified that during the mentioned period, transit traffic through the canal decreased by 30%, and the number of ships passing through it decreased to 544. Mr. Rabia said that the time for transporting goods has increased by at least two weeks, and costs for the delivery of goods and insurance are also increasing.
“An alternative passage for ships around the Cape of Good Hope cannot currently be considered safe due to weather conditions in the specified region,” the head of the department told the Masrawy portal (quoted by TASS).
At the end of 2023, the volume of cargo traffic through the Suez Canal decreased by 28% due to attacks by the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement on ships in the Red Sea. Their attacks on ships have become more frequent amid the war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement.
January 12 USA and UK struck on Houthi positions in Yemen. The attack was carried out with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands. Today, January 13, USA inflicted Tomahawk cruise missile strike on Houthi radar.
