Reuters: US plans to tighten restrictions on semiconductor supplies to China

The US administration intends to expand restrictions on the supply of American semiconductors used in the field of artificial intelligence to China in October, reports Reuters with reference to sources. According to them, funds for the production of microcircuits will also fall under the restrictions.
The US Department of Commerce is expected to publish new rules prohibiting the sale of chip-making equipment to Chinese next-generation semiconductor factories unless they have a license from US authorities. Without a license, it will also be impossible to supply China with chips for artificial intelligence.
Reuters clarifies that the Ministry of Commerce may also include additional restrictions against China in the rules. A spokesman for the ministry declined to comment on the information, but said it “takes a comprehensive approach to taking action … to protect US national security and foreign policy interests.”
In August The Wall Street Journal informedthat the US continues to supply China with virtually everything it asks for, including “lots of semiconductors.” That same month, the administration of US President Joe Biden introduced new restrictions on the sale of sophisticated computer chips to Russia and China. According to The New York Times, the restrictions affected high-performance chip models made by Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.
