Reuters: mobile communication and Internet will worsen in Russia next year

Operators in Russia are losing the ability to update or patch software and are fighting for dwindling production parts, the agency writes. As a result, mobile phone users in Russia are likely to experience slower downloads and no connection during calls.

Ericsson and Nokia, which together account for a large share of the telecommunications equipment market and almost 50% of base stations in Russia, make everything from telecommunications antennas to equipment that connects optical fiber that transmits digital signals. They also provide important software that allows the various parts of the network to function in an integrated manner.

Nokia and Ericsson have announced that they will finally leave the Russian market and stop software updates by the beginning of next year.

December 19 Minister of Digital Development, Telecommunications and Mass Media of Russia Maksut Shadayev declaredthat four telecom operators signed contracts for the purchase of Russian-made equipment worth more than 100 billion rubles. He did not name operators or manufacturers.
