Refugee dies at Paris airport after living there for 18 years

Iranian refugee Meran Karimi Naseri died at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, where he lived from 1988–2006. He became the prototype for the films “Fallen from the Sky” by Philippe Liore (1993), “Terminal” by Steven Spielberg (2004). An airport official told AP that the cause of death was a heart attack.
Meran Karimi Naseri was born in 1945 in Iran. He studied in the UK, after returning to his homeland he ended up in prison, and after that he was expelled without documents. He tried to get asylum in several countries, but ended up at the Paris airport. For many years, the refugee remained there due to “bureaucratic confusion” and the tightening of immigration laws.
Meran Karimi Naseri received refugee status in France in 1999, but refused to leave the airport immediately. Since 2006, he lived in a Parisian shelter, but a few weeks before his death, he returned to the airport.
