The Russian airline Red Wings Airlines will resume flights to Georgia. From October 31, flights to Kutaisi will be operated on Tuesdays and Sundays. From November 2, every Thursday and Sunday – in Tbilisi.
“Air communication with Georgia will be resumed under a new program. The first flight will be in the direction of Kutaisi. There will also be direct flights in the direction of Tbilisi,” President of the Ural Tourism Association Mikhail Maltsev told reporters (quoted from Interpressnews).
The Georgian United National Movement party called for protests on the day of the first arrival of the Red Wings plane in Kutaisi. The party believes that flights to Kutaisi are an attempt by the Russian company to interest Yekaterinburg residents in cheap connecting flights to the EU under sanctions. At the same time, the party states that flights from the Russian Federation to Georgia are a direct violation of EU sanctions.
Red Wings, like other Russian airlines, stopped flights to Georgian cities in July 2019 in accordance with the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who banned flights to Georgia after anti-Russian protests by United National Movement activists in Tbilisi.
The head of the Russian state allowed flights from May 15, 2023, after which several Russian airlines began flying to Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi. Currently, Russian airlines fly to Georgia with a frequency of 45 flights per week.
