“Tender May” in the form in which it was invented in the eighties becomes history. The main soloist and main voice of the group, Yuri Shatunov, died in June of this year. On Monday, November 7, it became known about the death of composer Sergei Kuznetsov, who wrote the group’s hits.
Sergei Kuznetsov has already been played in a movie once – in the film “Tender May” (2009), his image went to actor Maxim Litovchenko. But the life of a self-taught composer, of course, is worthy of a separate scenario.
The future author of hits was born in Mednogorsk and became interested in music under very dramatic circumstances. Twelve-year-old Sergei found a detonator and, after the explosion and clinical death, spent three months in the hospital with bandaged eyes. An additional therapy for him was the music of the French electronic group Space, under the influence of which the boy himself began to compose melodies.
Sergei graduated from music school as an external student in one year, but he studied at the school for only seven months, so he could only work as a leader of a circle in an orphanage in Orenburg. It was there that the idea of a children’s musical group arose, and White Roses, Pink Evening, Gray Night and other songs were written that drove millions of people crazy.
The role of Kuznetsov in the history of “Tender May” is perhaps the main one. Sergey composed the brightest hits, found Yuri Shatunov and insisted that it was he who should go to Moscow to record in a professional studio and then perform on stage instead of dummy artists who, a couple of years after the creation of the group, were traveling around the country at the suggestion of Andrei Razin and opened their mouths to orphanage phonograms.
Kuznetsov’s composing style has often been ironized as typically amateur. However, naive, but at the same time very tenacious melodies, combined with Shatunov’s vocals, miraculously hit the right time. It turned out that it was precisely this kind of music that many people lacked at that time, and it was these songs, despite all the forecasts, that could be remembered for decades.
As often happened in the young and wild perestroika show business, tunes that touched a huge number of people ended up being the subject of a very cynical trade. And as a result of all these transactions, the main author was practically at a broken trough. According to the memoirs of Kuznetsov himself, his royalties did not exceed several thousand rubles a month, and the conflict with Razin lasted until the very last days of the composer.
