The Qatari state-owned QatarEnergy and the Italian energy company Eni have signed a long-term agreement to supply up to 1 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually from Qatar to Italy. As noted in statement QatarEnergy, the agreement was signed for a period of 27 years.
Under the terms of the agreement, LNG deliveries will begin in 2026, using feedstock from the North Field field as part of the North Field East (NFE) gas expansion project in Qatar, in which Eni has a 3.125% stake. The LNG will be delivered to a floating storage and regasification facility in the Italian port of Piombino. Thanks to previous and existing agreements with Qatar, Italy provides more than 10% of its natural gas needs.
QatarEnergy also signed similar deals for the supply of LNG from Qatar for a period of 27 years from the beginning of October with the Dutch Shell and from French TotalEnergies. The Netherlands and France will receive 3.5 million tons of LNG per year under these agreements. In June, the Chinese national oil and gas corporation CNPC signed a contract with QatarEnergy for the supply of 4 million tons of LNG per year. The contract period is the same – 27 years. Another Chinese company, Sinopec, signed a similar contract with the Qatari producer in November 2022, also for a period of 27 years with the supply of up to 4 million tons of LNG per year. At the same time, Germany, which was previously the largest importer of Russian gas, entered into an agreement with QatarEnergy under which it would purchase 2 million tons of LNG over the course of 15 years.
