Putin once again explained why eggs have risen in price – Kommersant

Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with business representatives at the Pacific State University in Khabarovsk, said that the rise in prices for eggs is due to the fact that people began to buy them more often. In December, he already said that the reason for the rise in price of eggs was the increase in demand for them.

“We just didn’t get our bearings in time. The volume of production did not decrease, consumption increased due to the increase in real disposable income of the population. Still, people’s incomes increased a little, and they began to buy more eggs and chicken meat,” the president said.

Vladimir Putin added that the authorities did not open the import of eggs on time. In this regard, he said, one needs to be “very careful.”

Retail egg prices rose sharply in November. In December, eggs became one of the most expensive products: their price rose by 10–20% in 46 regions of Russia. Vladimir Putin at the “Results of the Year” statedthat demand for goods exceeded supply, and imports were not opened on time in the required volume.

On December 18, the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission zeroed out duties on imports of chicken eggs to Russia from January 1 to June 30, 2024. On December 19 and 23, batches of chicken eggs from Azerbaijan were delivered to the country. In January, like reported Ministry of Agriculture, they will begin to be imported from Turkey.
