Putin expects a breakthrough in microelectronics, aircraft manufacturing and 5G from Rostec

President Vladimir Putin called on Rostec to work more actively in promising areas that ensure “Russia’s technological sovereignty.” In his opinion, breakthrough results are needed in such areas as microelectronics, aircraft engineering and equipment for 5G networks.

“Of course, I expect noticeable, breakthrough results from Rostec in such areas as microelectronics and electronic component base, aircraft manufacturing, equipment for fifth generation communication networks, in general, more effective search, implementation and promotion of domestic high-tech solutions in all areas important for development of our economy, determining the modern quality of life of people, eliminating dependence on imports,” Mr. Putin said at an event dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the state corporation. His words are quoted in website Kremlin.

According to the President, Russia has what it takes to achieve breakthrough results: “splendid, unique world-class scientific schools, innovative, ambitious teams of scientists and inventors, a powerful industrial base, experienced, qualified workers, talented, strong, well-motivated youth.” The head of state believes that a significant share of this “huge intellectual, production potential” is concentrated in the control loop of Rostec.

Head of the Ministry of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev the day before declaredthat Russia has achieved digital sovereignty, as all foreign IT companies have left the market. At the same time, he believes that the scale of the departure of IT specialists from Russia is not global, “it did not cause serious damage.”

The United States in November tightened sanctions against Russian manufacturers and developers of microelectronics. Washington has imposed blocking restrictions on a number of companies that the US believes helped Russian chipmaker Milandr place orders abroad. Kommersant’s sources believe that this threatens to completely isolate the Russian Federation from foreign capacities, while domestic factories are able to cover only 3% of the demand for microcircuits.
