Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed IT companies and authorities to pay attention to e-sports and support it. The first eSports tournament in Russia will take place at the end of this year.
“An annual eSports tournament will be organized in the Far Eastern Federal District. This direction has already gained great popularity all over the world. Moreover, our cybersportsmen are in leading positions. Holding high-level competitions in Russia will serve to promote computer sports both in our country and abroad,” the president said during his speech at the EEF.
Since the spring of 2022, against the background of the outbreak of the military conflict in Ukraine, the largest Russian e-sports clubs began to be deprived of the right to participate in international competitions. For example, the organizer of CS:GO tournaments ESL Electronic Sports League (ESL) suspended the Russian clubs Virtus.pro and Gambit from the ESL Pro League tournament. EA Sports has removed Russia and Belarus from the list of countries eligible for participation in its esports programs.
