Putin banned registration on Russian websites using foreign e-mail

President Vladimir Putin signed law, which prohibits registration on Russian sites using foreign e-mail. The law was adopted by the State Duma 26 Julyapproved by the Federation Council July 28th. Amendments were made to the Federal Law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection” and the Federal Law “On Communications”.

According to the law, from December 2023 register on sites in Runet it will be possible only with the help of a Russian number and mail, biometric data or an account on the Gosuslug portal. On Russian sites that require user registration, it will not be possible to register through foreign mail or accounts connected, for example, via Apple ID or Google.

The law does not have retroactive effect, which means that after its entry into force, the changes will only affect new registrations, said one of the authors of the initiative, State Duma deputy Anton Gorelkin (United Russia). Thus, already registered accounts linked to foreign e-mail services will continue to work.
