Valery Gergiev’s 70th birthday was marked by a high state award
Today, the official portal of legal information has published a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin on awarding the artistic director and director of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev with the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree. On May 2, he turns 70 years old.
The decree notes that the high state award is given to the People’s Artist of Russia Gergiev “for his great contribution to the development of national culture and art, many years of fruitful activity.”
Valery Gergiev was born in Moscow, and a significant part of his creative biography turned out to be connected with St. Petersburg (Leningrad): in 1977 he graduated from the Leningrad State Conservatory named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov and began work at the Leningrad State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. CM. Kirov (now the State Academic Mariinsky Theatre). In 1988 he was elected musical director of the Mariinsky Theatre, and in 1996 he became its artistic director.
