President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on awarding the Mariinsky Theater director Valery Gergiev with the Order for Services to the Fatherland, 2nd class. Today, May 2, he turned 70 years old. The award was given for “great contribution to the development of national culture and art, many years of fruitful activity.”
Valery Gergiev began work at the Leningrad State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. S. M. Kirov (Mariinsky Theatre) in 1977. In 1988 he became chief conductor of the theater and artistic director of its opera troupe.
He was a confidant of Vladimir Putin in the presidential elections of 2012 and 2018. In March 2022, conductor Georgiev suspended from the post of chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic. In the same year, the Paris Philharmonic canceled concerts by the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra led by the musician, and Carnegie Hall in New York canceled his performances by Mr. Gergiev.
