Public Health France estimates at six the number of fatal work accidents possibly linked to this summer’s heat wave

Two additional cases of fatal accidents that could be linked to heat waves that occurred during the summer have been identified by the French health authorities. According to information from the Directorate General for Labor notified to Public Health France, ” a [cas a été] observed during the July heat wave, and one during this new heat wave”in early August, the public health agency announced in its latest balance sheet posted Wednesday, August 17.
These two deaths are in addition to the other cases mentioned in previous reports, which brings the total to six deaths at work possibly linked to the heat wave, the health authority told Agence France-Presse. Public Health France did not give more details on the nature of these deaths, their precise date or the identity of the victims.
In other European countries, marked like France by multiple episodes of heat wave, during which many temperature records were broken, workers died due to exposure to very high temperatures. These deaths, which took place in particular in Spain or Italy, have, for example, affected agricultural employees or people working in warehouses.
In addition, and more generally, Public Health France gave an initial estimate of excess mortality in July in France, estimating it at 20%. However, this figure does not distinguish deaths specifically linked to heat waves, especially since the month of July was also marked by an epidemic wave of Covid-19. The authorities intend to give a more specific assessment in September.
In 2021, a year when the summer was marked by its coolness compared to previous years, no case of heat-related mortality was reported to the French health authorities, according to the report of Public Health France of the time.
