American industrial concern Pratt & Whitney received from the US government a major contract for the supply of engines for the latest fifth-generation fighter F-35 Lightning II. As part of the deal, worth about $5.2 billion, the company will produce 278 F135 engines, with an option for an additional 240 engines.
“This contract allows us to continue delivering key fifth-generation fighter equipment at reasonable taxpayer prices,” said Pratt & Whitney Vice President Jennifer Latka. It is reported that by December 2022, the US military received more than 1 thousand F135 engines from Pratt & Whitney.
Deliveries were halted in December after an F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing fighter aircraft crashed in Texas during an acceptance test. As a result of the incident, the state commission conducted an investigation that lasted several weeks. At the end of February, the authorities came concluded that the crash was not caused by engine defects or design flaws.
