The German authorities, for reasons of national security, are considering a ban on the use of equipment and components of Chinese telecommunications companies Huawei and ZTE in local networks of the fifth generation (5G). This was reported by the agency. Reuters and German edition Zeit Online.
The German Ministry of the Interior confirmed the study of “telecommunications equipment supply policy”, but stated that “this is not directed against specific manufacturers.” Representatives from Huawei and ZTE declined to comment on the “media speculation”, saying the companies had a good track record over the years of supplying equipment to Germany. In turn, the leading mobile operators Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone Germany noted that they fully comply with all existing requirements of the authorities, also refusing to comment on media reports.
Currently, many European countries, for reasons of national security, are revising their policies in the field of telecommunications equipment supplies. But only the UK and Sweden have banned the purchase of Huawei and ZTE components for their 5G networks. In 2018, to US government departments banned use Huawei equipment, which US authorities accuse of having close ties to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
