Potato producers proposed to limit its imports

Domestic potato producers are faced with the problem of marketing products – according to them, the warehouses now have record potato stocks for this time of year. This issue was discussed at a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture on February 17, two participants told Vedomosti. The fact of holding the meeting was confirmed by the Chairman of the Presidium of the Association of Retail Companies Igor Karavaev.
A proposal was made to temporarily limit the import of this vegetable to the Russian Federation, sources told Vedomosti. According to them, this measure was proposed by the Potato Union. The representative of this organization declined to comment on this issue. The representative of the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the fact of the meeting. According to him, the ministry is ready to consider a proposal to restrict imports after a reasonable initiative is received. The representative of the ministry stressed that the stimulation of the production of Russian vegetables will continue.
The main reason for the problem of selling potatoes is the high yield, which provoked a decrease in prices in the wholesale sector, says a participant in the meeting. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2022, the gross harvest of this vegetable increased by 4.3% compared to the previous year, to 18.7 million tons, and prices at the beginning of February year-on-year in the wholesale sector fell by 37.3% to 17 .2 rub. for 1 kg. Farmers, on the contrary, expected an increase in value, for which they held potatoes and did not sell them on the market. This has led to the fact that 40 to 60% of the harvest of individual farms is stored in warehouses, assures a source in one of the companies.
