Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki: EU cannot introduce gas price ceiling because of Nordic countries

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that the European Union cannot agree on a gas price ceiling, primarily because of the position of the Nordic countries.

“At the EU level, there is still no way to reach a common denominator, especially with several Nordic countries. They constantly do not see the possibility of setting a price ceiling, even at the level of €180-190 per 1 MWh (about €1.8-1.9 thousand per 1 thousand cubic meters),” said Mr. Morawiecki (quoted from TASS).

According to the Prime Minister, the introduction of a maximum price for natural gas will help ensure predictability for Polish and European businesses. He urged EU partners to “use economic power and not hide in the back alleys as soon as the Kremlin and Moscow wag their fingers.”

Yesterday, December 13, EU energy ministers failed agree on a price limit for gas. According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, the gas price ceiling is the wrong decision of the EU, as there is an energy crisis in Europe now.

On December 11, Bloomberg, citing European deputies, reported on disagreements among EU member states on the issue of gas price restrictions. 12 countries demanded reduce the proposed gas price ceiling. In particular, the Czech Republic called for lowering the ceiling price to €220.

According to the plan proposed by the European Commission, the restriction comes into force if the gas price for at least two weeks on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange exceeds €275 per 1 MWh (approximately $3,000 per 1,000 cubic meters). The difference with the LNG price must exceed €58 for at least ten days.
