Russia is not yet facing the impact of a ceiling on its oil prices, according to presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov. According to him, the Kremlin is skeptical about attempts to calculate the losses of the Russian Federation from these restrictions. According to the Helsinki Center for Energy and Clean Air Research (CREA), capping oil prices manages Russia at $172 million a day.
Kommersant FM asked Mr. Peskov to comment on these figures during a press call. The spokesman said that it would be better to ask about the assessments of specialists – first of all, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, who oversees this area. At the same time, he believes that “it is certainly too early” to predict the effect of the price cap. “Obviously, there is no texture for such conclusions. Therefore, I would be skeptical about all these forecast figures,” the Kremlin spokesman assured. According to him, “so far no one has come across the ceiling in particular.”
CREA expects Russia’s losses to rise to $280 million a day from Feb. 5, when the restriction extends to petroleum products. EU embargo on oil from Russiavalid from December 5, 2022, from the same day, a price ceiling was set for sea supplies of this fuel ($60 per barrel). Russian President Vladimir Putin banned supply of oil and oil products under the price ceiling without his personal permission.
