Pilgrims started to be let into the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, reported “RIA News” and TASS. The icon “Trinity” by Andrey Rublev is exhibited in the temple.
The “Trinity” was installed in a special capsule in the center of the main chapel of the temple. Employees of the Tretyakov Gallery will watch the icon. According to TASS, “hundreds of people” came to the temple.
Icon delivered to the temple last night, June 3rd. The company “Art-Courier” was engaged in transportation. According to media reports, the same company transported the Trinity to Sergeyev Posad to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra last summer.
The Moscow Patriarchate announced in May that by decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Trinity would be transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Reportedthat the icon will be in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior for a year, after which it will return to the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
In turn, the Ministry of Culture claims that the “Trinity” will stay in the temple for two weeks, after which it will be sent for a planned restoration. In a press release, the departments emphasized that the icon is part of the state museum fund.
The museum community has been opposing the removal of the icon from the Tretyakov Gallery for many years. According to experts, even a temporary stay of a fragile icon outside the comfortable museum conditions threatens to destroy the world’s most famous monument of ancient Russian art.
